Can anyone explain why sources predominantly use "small cell cancer" without a hyphen? Ditto for "small bowel series." Also I find "non-small cell cancer" Doesn't this qualify as a compound adjective consisting of an adjective+noun? I've used the compound adjective rule to justify my usages: non-small-cell cancer, non-ST-elevation MI, non-ST-segment-elevation MI, and ST-segment elevation. I am now questioning this behavior and wondering if my use of hyphens should be different, i.e. non-ST segment elevation MI, ST segment MI, etc., using the hyphen only after "non" in these phrases.
