I would like to hear about the different methods to increase your line count. Any little tricks of the trade at all ....ideas that make things easier.

I really like the book Saving Keystrokes by Diana Rolland. Her book really helped me out with different tips and ideas.
Good luck,

I bought the book "Saving Keystrokes," and it is a good book. They want 140 lines per hour where I work. I think my problem is that I spend too much time figuring out a term or phrase before moving on.

I am glad you like the book Barbara. My company expects 144 lph also. It has been suggested to me to use an egg timer when researching and stop after 1 to 3 minutes and to stop listening to the same phrase/word I am stuck on after 3 listens. Time is money. ;D I started a chart today and wrote down every single time I left the computer, checked email, etc., so I can see what the heck I can do different to raise my cashflow. I have a feeling I will be surprised how much time I waste dinking around. Good luck, Lucy P.S. - I have no clue about Chronicle. Sorry.

I found that the egg timer is a good tool too! It seems as if the timer is fast (meaning that I am spending too much time trying to research!) If I can stick to using the egg timer I am okay, I am just the type to not like to leave Any blanks whatsoever. It is really hard to do. Otherwise, I make sure I let the dog out, and be sure to tell my daughter that if she is going to have a snack before bed to make sure it is before I start work at 10 p.m. (she is out of school for the summer). If I make sure these two basic things are taken care of before I start my shift then it makes my night/production go much smoother! No "just running to the dishwasher or washer, etc." for a sec. That is a real sidetracker and time grabber! The house can wait...
Sorry for the babble! See! I do get distracted! teehee

Oh and I use macros And IT for my shortcuts, especially for ER and Op reports. There is hardly a doc who does not use the same format over and over again (or pretty close)!

I am going to have to look into one of the egg timers!
Now did y'all get the one with the sand ... or what?

I have the one with the sand that I yanked out of a game box. I didn't even go buy one. One of my kids had Pictionary and I stole the sand timer. LOL. I hope they want to play it soon and know how the heck it feels to not have what you want when you want! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
(We need a devil smiley on here.)

Sadly I don't have a game with one of those in there. So I think I will have to go get one.

The egg timer is something I will try. Any help at all is a plus for me. Once a month, my supervisor sends out that line count!

I just wanted to pop in with my 2 cents . I'm not quite sure what an egg timer is, but I DO use a digital timer because I am a HUGE procrastinator and can't seem to stay in my seat . I bought a digital timer at the dollar store and then liked my mom's kitchen timer better so I took it ; it goes up to 19 hours 59 minutes and I set it for 2 hours each time. When I have to look up a word, I stop the timer (I only "count" typing time). Since I started this, I've gone up from 89 lph to 200 lph! Of course, I also use IT Pro and I do 98% ER and 2% DS so that helps a lot!

My tips aren't anything magical, but they still took me about a year to really figure out. 1. Keep your butt in your chair! This is with the exception of 5 minutes of exercise every hour. This can be things putting another load of laundry in the washer, doing some quick stretches, jogging on the spot for a few minutes, etc. 2. Use your expander in an *efficient* manner. I've heard many people say it, and I used to say it myself: "But I DO use my expander." If it's not significantly increasing your line count, you're NOT using it. My hangup was that I didn't have a logical method of adding expansions. I always *thought* the shortcut was logical at the time, only to find out I couldn't remember it later and had to make a new one. If you stick to a logical method, such as the abcz method, and add words/phrases to your expander if you type them more than twice and then follow through by using all of those expansions, your line count will really jump. I found the most effective way for teaching myself to use the expansions I created was to always type them, even if it meant going back, deleted the word I had typed out in full because I forgot to use the shortcut, and then typing it in using the shortcut. After awhile I just automatically used shortcuts for words/phrases I knew I had typed before. It made it easy for me to figure out when a shortcut needed to be made because I would type in the abcz method shortcut automatically (instead of the word); if it didn't expand into a word, I needed to make a shortcut for it.
